Follow Allah(swt) & Follow His Prophet(Peace Be Upon Him)

FOLLOW ALLAH AND FOLLOW HIS PROPHET (PEACE BE UPON HIM)
 By Samia Salim

A lot of people believe strongly in the fact that belief in the Quran and strictly following of the Sunnah is the right way, whereas others just think that believing in the Quran is enough and that to follow the sunnah is of no importance. The second one being a statement running in paradox. If one strongly believes in the Quran then one is bound to follow the ways and practices of the Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him.

The Prophet peace be upon him is the most revered person. At his time he was surrounded by companions and followers who loved him dearly. Umar Bin khattab(r.a), Abu Bakr (r.a), Ali (r.a), Usman Ghani (r.a), Bilal(r.a), Hamza(r.a) and many others. Even today people love him from the very core of their hearts. But today we have prioritized other things to his sunnah and his teachings. We do love him but we cannot sacrifice our own ways for his. The other most commonly found thing in our love is that we tend to praise him beyond the praise that is due to him.

Today the Muslim ummah suffers, and suffers not because of others or our enemies, but we suffer because of our egos. We have divided ourselves into sects. Each of them having its own set of beliefs(aqeedas). We have given up our patience and so even listening to each other has become impossible. Muslims today cannot unite and cannot stand as one until we firmly hold on to the tenets of Quran and the Sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. We have to let go, the interpretations of our Holy Book that have been wrongly done in order to fulfill our egos or our personal motives. A book whose protection is the responsibility of our Allah, an unchanged book since the past 1400 years, along with the sunnah of our Prophet peace be upon him. It is time to ponder why we tend to differ on its interpretation.

The reason I really wanted to bring together some ahadith and some verses of the Quran was because I wanted to atleast indicate that belief in Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him is the basic Aqeeda of our religion Islam, and also reading and following the Sunnah of the Prophet peace be upon him is equally important. Even after reading the Quran if we fail to believe in the Sunnah or its importance then we need to read it again.

Follow ALLAH and Follow His Prophet (Peace be upon him)

The Prophet( peace be upon him) was a living example of piety, humbleness, justice and equality.  He is a role model for this Ummat to follow. The divine Guidance was revealed to him 1400 years back but the wisdom behind the Quran and his ahadith live with us even today. He was a man loved for his foresight and insight. He always made decisions with precision. He did not believe in unnecessary bloodshed or fight. In the 23 years of his Prophethood he made several treaties with the Jews and the Quraish so that the Muslims could live in peace.

Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him is the seal of Prophethood. The process of Divine revelation which started with Prophet Daud (a.s) then Prophet Moses (a.s) then Jesus (a.s) ended with the final word of Allah “The Quran” being revealed on the last Prophet and Messenger of Allah, “ Muhammad Salla laho alay he wassalam’.

He was an unlettered Prophet from the tribe of Banu Hashim. At a very early age he became an orphan but his grandfather and uncle took great care of him.

“And hold fast, all of you together, to the rope of Allah (i.e. the Quran and sunnah), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allah’s favor on you, for you were enemies to one another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His grace, you became brethren (in Islamic faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allah makes His ayat(proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided.

Surah Imran 103

It has been narrated by Abu Hurairah (r.a) in the Hadtih books (at-tirmidhi, Ibn majah and Abu dawud) that the Prophet peace be upon him said: “ The jews and Christians were divided into seventy one or seventy two religious sects, and this nation will be divided into seventy three religious sects- All in hell, except one, and that one is: The one on which I and my Companions are today [i.e. following the Quran and the Prophets sunnah(legal ways, orders, acts of worship and statements of the Prophet peace be upon him)].”

And remember when Ibrahim and his son Ismael were raising the foundations of the Kaabah saying,        “Our Lord! Accept this service from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All knower.”

“Our Lord!  And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik, and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

“Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own who shall recite unto them Your verses and instruct them in the Book and Al Hikmah, and purify them. Verily! You are the All- Mighty, the All-wise.”

127-129  Surah Baqra

Say (O Muslims), “We believe in Allah and that which has been sent down to us and that which has been sent down to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, and to Al-Asbat, and that which has been given to Musa and Isa, and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted.

137  Surah Baqra

And who is more unjust than he who conceals the testimony [of that to believe in Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him when he comes, as is written in their books] he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.”

140 Surah Baqra

Thus we have made you a just nation, that you be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger (Muhammad Peace be upon him) be a witness over you.

143 Surah Baqra

Narrated Sa’id Al- Khudri (R.A): Allah’s messenger (peace be upon him) said “ Nuh will be called on the Day of resurrection and he will say, “ Labbaik and Sa’daik, ( I respond to Your call and I am obedient to Your orders) O my Lord! Allah will say, ‘Did you convey Our Message of Islamic Monotheism?’ Nuh will say, ‘Yes’. His nation will then be asked, ‘Did he convey Our Message of Islamic monotheism to you?’ They will say, ‘No warner came to us.’ Then Allah will say to Nuh, ‘ Who will bear witness in your favor” He will say, ‘Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his followers.’ So they (i.e muslims) will testify that he conveyed the message- and the Messenger (Peace be upon him) will be a witness over you, and that is what is meant by  the statement of Allah, ‘We made you a just nation that you be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger ( peace be upon him) will be a witness over you.”

Sahih al Bukhari Volume 6 Hadith no 14

This  is the book (the Quran), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are al-Mutaqqun.
Who believe in the Ghaib and peform As-Salat, and spend out of what we have provided for them. And who believe in(the Quran and the Sunnah) which has been sent down (revealed) to you (Muhammad peace be upon him) and in that which were sent down before you (the Torah and the Gospel) and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter.

2-4 Surah Baqra

Narrated Ibn Umar (r.a): Allahs messenger (peace be upon him) said : Islam is based on the following five principles:
1)      To testify that “ la illah illalah wa anna Muhammad ur Rasul Allah” ( none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad peace be upon him is the Messenger of Allah).
2)      Iqama-as-Salat ( to perform the five compulsory congregational prayers
3)      To pay zakat
4)      To perform Hajj
5)      To observe Saum (fasting) in the month of Ramadan.
Sahih Al Bukhari vol 1 Hadith no 7

O Children of Israel! REMEMBER My favor which I bestowed upon you, and fulfil your obligations to My covenant with you so that I fulfil ( My obligations to) your covenant (with Me), and fear none but Me.

And believe in what I have sent down (this Quran), confirming that which is with you, ( the Torah and the Gospel) and be not the first to disbelieve therein, and buy not with My verses a small price and fear Me and Me alone.

And mix not the truth with falsehood, nor conceal the  truth ( i.e Muhammad Peace be upon him is Allahs messenger and his qualities are written in your Scriptures, the Torah and the Gospel) while you know ( the truth).

40-42 Surah Al Baqra

“Whoever is an enemy to Allah, His Angels, His messengers, Jibrael and Mikael, then verily, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.”

98 Surah Baqra

Say ( O Muhammad peace be upon him): “ O people of the Scripture ( Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: “ Bear Witness that we are Muslims.”

Surah Imran 64

Muhammad( peace be upon him) is no more than a Messenger, and indeed (many) Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels( as disbelievers)? And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah; and Allah will give reward to those who are grateful.

Surah Imran  144

Verily, those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers and wish to make distinction between Allah and His Messengers( by believing in Allah and disbelieving in His Messengers) saying, “ We believe in some but reject others,” and wish to adopt a way in between.
They are in truth disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment.
And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and make no distinction between any of them (Messengers), We shall give them their rewards; and Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most merciful.

Surah Nisa 150-152

Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you ( O Muhammad peace be upon him) have no concern in them in the least. Their affair is only with Allah, Who then will tell them what they used to do.

Surah Anam 159

It is said that the Prophet( peace be upon him) recited the above verse and said: “ These people are those who invent new things ( Bi’dah) in religion and the followers of the vain desires of this Muslim nation, and their repentance will not be accepted by Allah.”
……
Remember when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying), “I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other(following one another) in succession.”

Allah made it only as glad tidings, and that you hearts be at rest therewith. And there is no victory except from Allah. Verily, Allah is All- Mighty, All-Wise.

(Remember) when He covered you with a slumber as a security from Him, and He caused water(rain) to descend on you from the sky, to clean you thereby and to remove from you the Rijz of Shaitain, and to strengthen your hearts, and make your feet firm thereby.

(Remember) when your Lord revealed to the angels, “ Verily Iam with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved, so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes.”

This is because they defied and disobeyed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever defies and disobeys Allah and His Messenger, then verily, Allah is severe in punishment.

Surah Al-Anfal 9-13

And among them are men who annoy the Prophet ( Muhammad peace be upon him) and say: “He is (lending his ear) (to every news).’ Say: “He listens to what is best for you; he believes in Allah; has faith in the believers; and is a mercy to those of you who believe.” But those who annoy Allahs Messenger( Muhammad peace be upon him) will have a painful torment.

Surah Tauba 61

Alif-Lam-Ra (These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (alone) knows their meanings.
This is a book which We have revealed unto you (O Muhammad peace be upon him) in order that you might lead mankind out of darkness( of disbelief and polytheism) into light (of belief in the Oneness of Allah and Islamic monotheism) by their Lord’s leave to the path of the All-Mighty, the Owner of all Praise.

Surah Ibrahim 1

Verily those who believe in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger (Muhammad Peace be upon him) and work deeds of righteousness, the Most gracious Allah will bestow love for them (in the hearts of the believers).

And We have send you (O Muhammad peace be upon him) not but as a mercy for the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists.)

Surah Anbiya 107

And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him), fears Allah, and keeps his duty (to Him), such are the successful.

Surah Nur 52

And We bestowed on him( Ibrahim A.S), Ishaq and Yaqub, and We ordained among his offspring Prophethood and the book (i.e the Taurat to Musa , the Injeel( Gospel) (To Isa-Jesus), and the Quran (to Muhammad peace be upon him), all from the offspring of Ibrahim, and We granted him his reward in this world; and verily, in the Hereafter he is indeed among the righteous.

Surah Al ankabut 27

The Prophet is  closer to the believers than their ownselves and his wives are their (believer’s) mothers (as regards respect and marriage). And blood relations among each other have closer personal ties in the Decree of Allah( regarding inheritance) than (the brotherhood of) the believers and the Muhajirun (emigrants from Makkah), except that you do kindness to those brothers (whom the Prophet peace be upon him joined them in brotherhood ties). This has been written in the Allahs book of divine decrees( Al Lauh Al Mahfuz).”

Surah Al Ahzab 6

Narrated Abdullah Bin Hisham (R.A): We were with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and he was holding the hand of Umar bin Al Khattab. ‘Umar said to Him, “ O Allah’s Messenger! You are dearer to me than everything except my ownself.” The Prophet Peace be upon him said, “No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, ( you will not have complete faith) till I am dearer to  you than your ownself.” Then ‘Umar said  to him, “Now by Allah. You are dearer to me than my ownself.” The Prophet peace be upon him said, “Now O, Umar ( Now you are a believer).”

Sahih Bukhari Vol 8 Hadith 628

Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad Peace be upon him) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the meeting with )Allah and the Last day, and remembers Allah much.

Surah Al Ahzab 21

Muhammad Peace be upon him is not the father of any of you men but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last (end) of the Prophets. And Allah is Ever watching, All Aware of everything.

Surah Al Ahzab 40

Narrated Abu Hurairah R.A : Allahs Messenger Peace be upon him said, “ My similitude in comparison with the other Prophets before me is that of a man who has built a house nicely and beautifully, except for a place of one brick in a corner. The people go round about it and wonder at its beauty, but say: ‘Would that this brick be put in its place!’ So I am that brick, and I am the last (end) of the Prophets.”

Sahih Al Bukhari Vol 4, Hadith no 735.

Verily those who annoy Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) Allah has cursed them in this world, and in the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating torment.

Surah Al Ahzab 57

{Annoy: By Abusing or telling lies against Allah and His Messenger ( peace be upon him), by making pictures-imitating Allahs creations, and by disobeying Allah and His Messenger (Peace be upon him).}

He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him), he has indeed achieved a great achievement (i.e he will be saved from the hell-fire and will be admitted to paradise).

Surah Al Ahzab 71

Say (to them O Muhammad peace be upon him) “I exhort you to one thing only: that you stand up for Allah’s sake in pairs and singly, and reflect (within yourselves the life history of the Prophet peace be upon him): there is no madness in your companion (Muhammad peace be upon him). He is only a warner to you in face of a severe torment.”

Verily, We have send you with the truth, a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. And there never was a nation but a warner had passed among them.

Surah Fatir 24

Verily, you ( O Muhammad peace be upon him) will die, and verily, they (too) will die.

Surah Az-Zumar 29

So unto this (religion of Islam alone and this Quran) then invite (people) (O Muhammad peace be upon him), and stand firm on Islamic monotheism (by performing all that is ordained by Allah (good deeds), and by abstaining from all that is forbidden by Allah (sins and evil deeds), as you are commanded, and follow not their desires but say : “I believe in whatsoever Allah has send down of the Book (all the Holy books,- this Quran and the Books of the old from the Taurat (Torah), or the Injeel (Gospel) or the Pages of Ibrahim) and I am commanded to do justice among you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. For us our deeds and for you your deeds. There is no dispute between us and you. Allah will assemble us (all), and  to Him is the final return.”

Surah Ash Shura 15

Whosoever desires (by his deeds) the reward of the hereafter, We give him increase in his reward, and whosoever desires the reward of this world( by his deeds), We give him thereof (what is decreed for him), and he has no portion in the Hereafter.

Surah Ash Shura 20

And thus We have sent to you ( O Muhammad peace be upon him)  Ruh (a revelation, and a Mercy) of Our Command, You knew not what is the Book, nor what is Faith? But We have made it (this Quran) a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our slaves We will. And verily, you ( O Muhammad peace be upon him) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the Straight path (i.e Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism).

Surah Ash Shura 52

O our People! Respond (with Obedience) to Allah’s caller (i.e Allah’s Messenger Muhammad peace be upon him) and believe in him (i.e Believe in that which Muhammad peace be upon him has brought from Allah and follow him). He (Allah) will forgive you of your sins, and will save you from a painful torment (i.e Hell-Fire).

It is obligatory to have Belief in the Messengership of the Prophet( Muhammad peace be upon him). Narrrated Abu Hurairah R.A : Allahs Messenger peace be upon him said: “ By Him (Allah) in whose Hand Muhammad’s soul is, there is none from amongst the Jews and the Christians (of these present nations) who hears about me and then dies without believing in the Message with which I have been sent (i.e Islamic monotheism), but will be from the dwellers of the Fire.”

Sahih Muslim Book of FAITH, vol 1 Hadith 240

But those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and believe in that which is sent down to Muhammad peace be upon him- for it is the truth from their Lord- He will expiate from them their sins, and will make good their state.

Surah Muhammad 2

Verily, We have sent you ( O Muhammad peace be upon him) as a witness, as a bearer of glad tidings, and as a warner.

Surah Al Fath verse 8-9

O you who believe! Make not (a decision) in advance before Allah and His Messenger peace be upon him, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is All Hearing, All Knowing.

But if you obey Allah and His Messenger ( peace be upon him), He will not decrease anything in reward for your deeds. Verily, Allah is oft-forgiving, Most merciful.”

Only those are the believers who have believed in Allah and His Messenger, and afterward doubt not but strive with their wealth and their lives for the Cause of Allah. Those! They are the truthful.

Surah Hujrat 14-15

Verily, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad peace be upon him) will be disgraced, as those before them (among the past nation), were disgraced. And we have sent down clear Ayat( proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations etc). And for the disbelievers is a disgracing torment.

Surah Mujadilah 5

Those who oppose Allah and his Messsenger (Muhammad peace be upon him), they will be among the lowest ( most humiliated).

He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger ( Muhammad peace be upon him) from among themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism), and teaching them the Book( this Quran, Islamic laws and Islamic jurisprudence) and al-Hikmah (As Sunnah : Legal ways, orders, acts of worship of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him). And verily, they had been before in manifest error.

If we really do love him then we should all try to follow his sunnah. For it is only the light of the Quran and his Sunnah that will help the humanity today in times of great suffering and pain.*
